O Gallery LA presents "Opaque," an exciting new art exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Mike Habs. Planet Rooth Studios in Cathedral City, California, will host the exhibition.
"Opaque" invites viewers into the colorful, expansive, and energetic world of abstract graffiti artist Mike Habs. Vibrancy, expression, precision, and technique are all explored, celebrated, and pushed to new limits in his third solo exhibition.
His new work demonstrates Mike's consistent technique progression and enthusiasm for the craft. It also displays extraordinary attention to detail. Painted chiefly with handmade spray paints, these works on canvas, wood, and aluminum submerge the viewer in breathtaking vibrancy while providing an energetic cathartic release.
A critical evolution within "Opaque" is the intensely vibrant colors obtained within Mike Habs' paintings from creating his own custom handmade acrylic spray paints and colors. In these newest works, he also delves into explorations of scale, form, and pursuit of transformational grace.
When asked about the show, Mike Habs shares, "Creating these works made me reflect on the critical elements within my process – color, surface, writing, etc - deconstruct each one, and then try to refine and push each of them as far as possible. All in service of the concepts conveyed and the interpersonal experience of the viewer. The show itself is an amalgamation of spontaneity contrasting with intention, paying homage to the constant pursuit of self-improvement in the face of adversity."
Influenced by the prominent contemporary artists of East Los Angeles, the combination of these elements integrates well with his signature, fragmented, abstract graffiti style. The show itself encapsulates spontaneous, expressive exploration while juxtaposing these concepts against advanced levels of precision amongst many details within the artworks.
The opening ceremony for "Opaque" will occur on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 5 PM to 9 PM PST. The show will remain on view through November 22 at Planet Rooth Studios in Cathedral City, CA, at 68-703 Perez Road #A-10.
About the Artist: Mike Habs
Mike Habs, originally from the south side of Chicago, is a contemporary artist recognized for his rhythmic approach to abstract expressionism and graffiti. He harnesses a deep knowledge of color and contrast to create captivating designs. His signature style encrypts inspirational messages of overcoming and transcending adversity.
ABC7 LA most recently selected Mike's artwork to celebrate 2024's Pride Month & AIDS Walk LA. His work has also been archived in the National Stonewall Museum & Archives, featured on NBC's "Will & Grace," painted 40 feet high in the Precinct LGBTQ+ bar in DTLA, and shown during Art Week Miami 2023. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
